STEFANO BOLLANI DANISH TRIO
Text by Alice Torriano
On November 2 we will have the opportunity to listen to Stefano Bollani, one of the most interesting pianists from all over Europe, in Concert Room 2 (Oriol Martorell) of the Auditorium. The concert will take place in the unique setting of the 47 Voll-Damm Barcelona Jazz Festival accompanied by Jesper Bodilsen on bass and Morten Lund on drums to form his “Danish Trio“.
Stefano Bollani is one of the most brilliant artists of the Italian jazz, with exceptional talent and already famous worldwide. Famous discovery of the visionary Enrico Rava, has worked with celebrities such as Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, Phil Woods, Uri Caine, Lee Konitz, Miroslav Vitous, Han Bennink, Aldo Romano, Michel Portal, Gato Barbieri, Bobby McFerrin, Martial Solal, John Abercrombie Kenny Wheeler, Greg Osby and Richard Galliano, among many others.
Bollani is a versatile and original artist in everything he does, whether as piano soloist, with symphony orchestras and in his role as writer and radio announcer. But Bollani is primarily a formidable jazz pianist who excels with a wide range of styles and incredible virtuosity.
The Florentine pianist and the other two members of the group met in 2002 when Bollani, after winning the prestigious “Jazzpar” Danish was to play in a sextet specially organized by Enrico Rava for a tour, of which also formed part Bodilsen and Lund. So, from this meeting was born a close connection between them, result of a similar musical training that culminated in an extensive artistic cooperation.
As Bollani recalls, he felt immediately in tune with the two Danish musicians: “It was a wonderful moment” – says the pianist – “And I thought it would be interesting to continue playing in trio, which we did the following year at first by Denmark and Scandinavia and then everywhere. ”
And it will surprise the public especially the quality of their interplay and the ability to breathe in unison. One answers to each other with the ease of a talk between friends. And, as Bollani says, “absolutely certain thing is that every note played will be heard and processed by Jesper and Morten. […] In this group, listening is fundamental and core and each of us, all the time, watch what others are playing, exactly my ideal of Jazz band “.
So far the Danish trio already has published four albums: “Mi ritorni in mente”, “Gleda” with Danish label Stunt; “Stone in the Water” with ECM, and the last with the beautiful title of “Joy in Spite of Everything“. Joy is a recurring element in the work of the trio, that “joy despite all” and lightness despite the inevitable shadows of life.
