FABRIZIO PATERLINI
Genre: Modern Classical
Written by Noemi Carretta
Fabrizio Paterlini is one of the most renowned Italian pianists with an emerging international reputation.
Born in Mantua in 1973, Fabrizio began playing the piano at the age of six. He studied at the Academy of Arts in Mantua, where he graduated in Music Theory. The artist defines his relationship with the instrument as “troubled”: as it happens to many boys who start playing classical music at a young age, he abandons the piano for a certain period of time and devotes himself to synthesizers and workstations. In the ’90s he plays in local cover bands with an interest in rock, pop and jazz. Later he returns to his instrument and decides to concentrate exclusively on it, defining it as the instrument that “best expresses his inner world”, and thus begins to compose his first album.
In 2007 he publishes his first work entitled “Viaggi in Aeromobile“, a work that marks a turning point in his life, a work that brings the audience into the inner world of the composer. Paterlini says that this first album of his was more of a personal satisfaction than a real conviction to pursue this career. But from that moment, in small steps, the artist began to become known, his music became very popular on the web and he began to be contacted.
The artist built his career without record labels, but created his own “Memory Recordings” to promote the talent of emerging artists.
Over the years Paterlini has released several albums and EPs, such as “Viandanze, Fragments Found, Autumun Stories, Now, The Art of Piano, Secret Book, Winter Stories, Transitions (I-II-III)“, and his latest album from 2021 “LifleBlood“. Some of them have reached a huge success, especially in digital platforms: to date he has more than 3 million monthly listeners and some of his tracks such as “Blow the Night” and “Fragments Found” have more than 50 million listens. The artist states that his compositions have been influenced by artists such as Ludovico Einaudi, Max Richter and Ólafur Arnalds, Dustin O’Halloran, Sigur Ròs, Jon Hopkins and Hauschka.
He has achieved great fame in America, especially in Hollywood, thanks to one of his biggest fans, the actor Chris Evans, who posted a video, which went viral, in which he practiced the piano in the artist’s song “Rue des Trois Frères“.
His most important tour took place in 2019, “Piano Stories 2019 Tour“, in which he played several sold out shows in Madrid, Barcelona, Utrecht, Moscow, Milan and Istanbul.
Listeners and critics are conflicted on how to label Paterlini’s music: neo classical, ambient, minimalist, new age, all styles that can be found in the artist’s sounds, but as he says composition is not bound by genre, composing means exploring within oneself with the utmost freedom without the constraint of genre, he defines his work “like a glass of red wine on a summer evening”, with the awareness of the calming effect of his reflective melodies on the listener.
