ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Anita Zengeza is a Zimbabwean singer and composer based in Barcelona. She is an innovative and eclectic artist with a fresh and original style of afro-fusion music. She was raised in a multicultural environment, born in Botswana, her father from Zimbabwe, her mother Chinese-Malay, so from a young age she had a strong interest in different cultural identities and styles of music. She began studying piano and singing when she was 8 and later, at the age of 17, won a scholarship to continue with her studies in Italy. After two years there she moved to Spain to pursue her dream of singing and composing. There she found inspiration, met musicians from all over the world and recorded and released two albums in 2013 and 2016. She is currently in the last year of her Bachelor’s Degree of Jazz and Modern Music in the prestigious Conservatori Liceu in Barcelona.
Anita’s voice has been described as expressive and moving: “her voice climbs and descends, lifts us up and plunges us down, providing multiple colours and textures that paint the many-faceted profiles of a unique personality” – Wiriko (African culture magazine). Her songs are a fusion of afro, Latin and jazz influences, groovy songs with a soulful vibe. With her voice and guitar she leads a band of talented and creative musicians, an international project born from the multiculturalism of Barcelona.
DISCOGRAPHY
Anita debuted with her self-titled album ‘Anita Zengeza.’ It was recorded in the Emergency Room Studios by the New York producer Dave Bianchi and was released digitally in August 2013 by the music label Whatabout Music (New York, Barcelona).
In May 2016 she released her second album ‘Natural Journey’ with the record label Slow Walk Music. There was a double presentation; first in Barcelona in the mythical Sala Jamboree and afterwards in Harare, Zimbabwe in Miombo Magic Festival. The album was overwhelmingly well-received and the following summer was a busy one with many gigs in Catalunya and a few in London. ‘Natural Journey’ shows the new artistic maturity and tight grooves of Anita and her band, with a stronger presence of African rhythms and riffs and heartfelt lyrics that describe how life can take you to unexpected places and how to make the most of the journey. Songs that will make you smile and cry, songs that will move you and make you dance!
